Unlock the Secrets of Nanomaterials

At the European Synchrotron (ESRF), we are on the cutting edge of materials science research, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the field of nanomaterials characterization. We invite a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join our team as a Research Scientist, where you will contribute to advancing our understanding of the structural properties of nanostructures.

Our research focuses on the characterization of copper (Cu) as a viable alternative to precious transition metals in catalytic applications. The challenges associated with Cu's multiple oxidation states have sparked debate among researchers, underscoring the need for high-resolution chemical and spatial analysis during catalytic reactions.

As a Research Scientist at ESRF, you will leverage coherent X-ray diffractive imaging in the Bragg geometry (BCDI) to probe the three-dimensional structure of nanomaterials. This non-destructive technique offers unparalleled spatial resolution and sub-angstrom precision, making it an ideal tool for studying the active phase of Cu under reaction conditions.

Your primary responsibility will be to develop and apply the nano-focused 3D spectroscopic coherent imaging technique at our nanoprobe ID01-EBS beamline. By doing so, you will enable imaging in complex crystalline materials at the nanoscale, addressing one of today's major challenges in nanoscience. This breakthrough will provide unprecedented insights into the chemical states and spatial distributions of catalysts, particularly Cu, under gas conditions.

To succeed in this role, you should possess a degree allowing enrollment for a PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related field. Programming skills in Python and experience or interest in developing data analysis software are also essential. Furthermore, a strong interest in material science and catalysis, as well as challenging experimental work, are crucial for this position.
