Overview
The PhD position is part of the Horizon Europe initiative AGRILOOP, which focuses on advancing circular agriculture by transforming agricultural residues into innovative economic, social, and environmental solutions. This project is coordinated by N. Gontard from INRAE and involves collaboration with 37 partners from various countries, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands, Hungary, Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and China.
Project Goals
AGRILOOP is driven by the necessity for a 'zero-waste' society and aims to enhance the eco-efficient conversion of underutilized agricultural residues into a range of high-value bioproducts. This is achieved through the development of safe and sustainable bioconversion processes integrated within a cascading biorefinery framework.
Research Unit Responsibilities
The joint research unit IATE, located in Montpellier, France, is tasked with the extraction of biomolecules, including polyphenols and carotenoids, utilizing a cascading biorefinery approach. The extracted biomolecules will serve as additives in the formulation of biomaterials for both food and non-food applications, such as packaging and agricultural materials.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe PhD candidate will engage in the following tasks:
- Developing an extraction process to recover high-value molecules in their native forms from agricultural residues.
- Elaborating the extraction of polyphenols, carotenoids, plant polyesters (cutin, suberin), and proteins while minimizing solvent and resource usage.
- Investigating the application of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) for extraction processes.
- Collaborating with fellow researchers to integrate the extracted molecules into biomaterial formulations.
This work will adopt an integrated approach that includes:
- Pre-treatment of agricultural residues.
- Development of the extraction process.
- Chemical and biological characterization of the extracts.
- Creation of predictive tools for structure/functionality relationships.
- Processing of materials with the developed additives.
- A Master's or Engineering degree in Chemistry (analytical, organic), polymer science, or materials science.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively in English, both spoken and written, and to engage with public and industrial partners.
- A strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
The selected candidate will participate in an international, multidisciplinary project, collaborating with scientists from various fields. Opportunities for geographical mobility may be available.
