Innovative Wireless Communication Systems Engineer

Context and Advantages of the Position

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the Internet of Things (IoT) and advancements in wireless communication standards, there exists a significant opportunity for innovation in hardware engineering to tackle existing network limitations. A notable recent advancement in this domain is the transition away from traditional crystal oscillators in wireless transceivers, a concept that has been adopted by industry leaders. Despite this progress, current solutions still incorporate bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators, necessitating the integration of multiple chiplets. Previous studies indicate that for basic modulation schemes commonly associated with IoT applications, the reliance on crystals can be eliminated through effective calibration and network feedback mechanisms. Additionally, the research conducted on this chip has served as a foundational element for educational initiatives at the University of California, Berkeley, where students engage in hands-on learning about the chip design process through practical coursework.

Assigned Mission

The role encompasses four primary objectives aimed at the advancement and implementation of next-generation wireless communication devices, alongside an initiative to enhance university education in integrated circuit design and wireless communications.

Firstly, you will continue to validate the hypothesis that certain radio systems can operate without crystal components. This will involve ongoing research into multi-hop mesh networking devoid of crystals and the establishment of a calibration-free, crystal-free network.

Secondly, you will apply insights gained from previous research on efficient radio-processor communication to create a wireless networking research platform.

Thirdly, you will exploit the capabilities of this research platform to facilitate the seamless integration of a versatile reprogrammable processor with a hardware-reconfigurable radio.

Lastly, you will utilize both historical research and contemporary advancements to employ the design of wireless systems-on-chip as a pedagogical resource.
