Position Overview

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is seeking a highly qualified individual to take on the role of Lead Research Scholar (LRS I or LRS II) for a two-year, renewable term within its Nutrition, Diets and Health Unit. This role will be based at IFPRI's headquarters and will require travel to various countries where IFPRI conducts its research initiatives. The LRS I/II will oversee intricate, multi-partner surveys and evaluations, mentor junior research personnel, and spearhead the creation of innovative research projects, including crafting proposals for the assessment of multisectoral programs and food systems aimed at enhancing dietary, nutritional, and health outcomes in low- and middle-income nations. Additionally, the LRS I/II will direct research efforts associated with the CGIAR Research Initiative on Fruit and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets (FRESH), which involves collaborating with program implementation partners to promote increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Key Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting research focused on diets, nutrition, health, and well-being in low- and middle-income countries, as well as evaluating the effects of multisectoral programs and food systems on these outcomes.
  • Developing and managing extensive and complex research projects and programs, including formulating work plans, coordinating research activities, monitoring progress, and disseminating findings to diverse audiences.
  • Designing and overseeing large-scale data collection efforts, such as household surveys, food environment assessments, dietary evaluations, and nutritional status surveys.
  • Supervising various research support staff and providing professional guidance and mentorship.
  • Collaborating closely with program implementation partners and key stakeholders to identify and design programmatic activities that address barriers to sustainable, healthy diets as part of multisectoral program evaluations.
  • Recruiting and managing national collaborators.
  • Overseeing the development and monitoring of project or program budgets.
  • Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Providing strong leadership in transforming new ideas into actionable proposals.
  • Preparing reports for donors and other stakeholders related to projects and programs.
  • Engaging with donors, senior government officials, and other stakeholders on project-related matters.
  • Effectively communicating research findings to a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers, academics, policymakers, and local partners.

Required Qualifications:

  • For the Lead Research Scholar I level: PhD in Nutrition, Public Health, Epidemiology, International Development, or a closely related field, with a minimum of 7 years of post-PhD experience.
  • For the Lead Research Scholar II level: PhD in Nutrition, Public Health, Epidemiology, International Development, or a closely related field, with a minimum of 10 years of post-PhD experience, along with significant external recognition within the professional community due to publications and leadership activities. A robust publication record in peer-reviewed journals is essential.
  • Strong proficiency in quantitative data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically analyze both personal and others' research.
  • A consistent and outstanding publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Proven leadership skills and extensive experience in team building and management.
  • Experience in developing global research programs with actionable policy recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively engage in multicultural environments with researchers, policymakers, donors, and civil society, facilitating the impact of research and capacity building.
  • Commitment to contributing to IFPRI's overall institutional values through active participation in organization-wide programs and initiatives.
  • Willingness to travel extensively as required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with a proven track record in written and oral presentations.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency (PC and Microsoft Applications).
  • Proven success in fundraising for broad and complex programs and projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in a second language recognized by the U.N. system.
  • Expertise in dietary assessment and analysis.
  • Experience with qualitative assessment methodologies and related analytical techniques and software.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Employee will be required to sit for extended periods.
  • Employee may lift items weighing between 0-10 pounds.
  • Close visual acuity is necessary for tasks such as preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing computer screens, and extensive reading.
