**About the role**:
Your role is to work as a post-doc on “Greenhouse gas emissions reduced and avoided by 6G”

General situation and issues of the topic

To find out whether 6G can be sustainable, its environmental footprint should be modeled and quantified. The impact of the roll-out and use of 6G as part of the digital sector on the one hand, and as part of the other sectors of society (transportation, industry, buildings, and so on) should be studied.

To assess the “avoided” carbon emissions by 6G, one ought to model and quantify the environmental impact of its roll-out and use. First, the environmental impact of every step of the life cycle of the equipment and activities needed to implement 6G should be estimated. This impact is considered a first-order effect in the meaning of Recommendation ITU-T L.1410 of the International Telecommunications Union. In this framework, this assessment must take into account the transfer from legacy technologies to 6G.

Beyond the first-order effects of 6G, it is essential to consider second-order effects (direct and indirect effects) induced by used 6G-based solutions in other sectors of society. Second-order effects characterize the substitution or optimization of the activities of a reference scenario defined without a 6G-based solution. A telling example of a second-order effect, in the case of videoconferencing, is the following: “I am using a video-conferencing solution, which replaces a trip, which allows me not to take my car”. Therefore, use cases for which 6G will induce activity substitution/optimization must be identified and studied, even more so the ones that require 6G (because there are impossible/complex with legacy technologies). For every use case, carbon emissions relative to these second-order effects should be modeled and quantified, whether on the rise or on the decline.

Scientific aim - results and locks to overcome
The aim is to qualify and if possible, quantify first-order (direct environmental effects) and second-order effects (indirect impacts) of the digital sector pertaining to the introduction of 6G.

The main technical or scientific locks to overcome are:

- Estimate the end-to-end environmental impact of the digital sector with 6G connectivity, including the transfer of legacy technologies to 6G;
- Compare this impact to a situation without the 6G technology;
- Second-order effects: qualify and quantify the environmental impact of substitution allowed by the introduction of some use cases of 6G.
