Apprenti in Space-borne Remote Sensing

The apprentice will work on a project dedicated to the creation of a database of clouds rendered by several space lidars.
Clouds play a crucial role in the Earth's energy balance, but their feedback is still uncertain. In-depth knowledge of clouds, including their coverage, vertical distribution and optical properties, is needed to understand and predict the Earth's energy balance and climate. Satellite observations have enabled continuous monitoring of clouds, with active sounders being particularly important for their vertical and horizontal resolution and accuracy. However, comparison of clouds retrieved by different spaceborne lidars is difficult due to differences in wavelength, pulse energy, detector type, local time of passage, etc. The proposed study will target a fusion of clouds measured by CALIPSO lidar (532nm, 2006-2023) with those from ALADIN/Aeolus (355nm, 2018-2023), ICESAT-2 (532nm, 2018-now) and ATLID/EarthCARE (355nm, to be launched in May/June 2024). The method involves compensating for instrumental differences to obtain comparable cloud data sets. This method paves the way for the integration of future lidars into the global lidar cloud record.
The team's main theme is the study of atmospheric parameters (clouds, wind, etc.) using space observation and, more specifically, space lidars (CALIOP lidar from the CALIPSO satellite, ALADIN lidar from ADM-AEOLUS and EarthCare's future ATLID lidar). This work requires the development of calculation codes, mainly in Fortran, Python and IDL programming languages.
During the project, the apprentice will become familiar with several aspects of remote sensing and spatial data processing: (1) operating principle of a spatial lidar; (2) reading and understanding observations at the detector level (L0 and L1); (3) detecting clouds from lidar signals and compensating for differences between lidars; (4) visualizing results and presenting them to experts. The apprentice will undoubtedly deepen his or her knowledge of scientific coding.
