The Head of Litigation - APAC & Europe will lead the Legal team responsible for litigation and pre-litigation management across AXA XL’s Business Units in APAC & Europe.

You will report to the Global Head of Litigation for AXA XL.

As** Head of Litigation - APAC & Europe **you will oversee and actively manage all disputes and threatened disputes across AXA XL’s Business Units in APAC & Europe.

In this highly visible role, you will engage with senior executives, key business leaders, regulators, clients, brokers, and other key stakeholders.

What will your essential responsibilities include?
- Overseeing a team of in-house lawyers responsible for litigation and pre-litigation management of both claims-related litigation and disputes arising out of insurance business written in APAC & Europe as well as general corporate litigations and disputes.
- Providing strategic thinking and management of all litigation and threatened litigation across AXA XL’s Business Units in APAC & Europe.
- Hands-on management of high-profile matters, in addition to management of external counsel across a broad spectrum of litigation/arbitration matters.
- Collaborating with other regional Litigation Heads and Legal colleagues to align on service offering and task allocation.
- Engaging with senior leadership on portfolio trends as well as short
- and long-term strategies to address them.
- Act as a primary point of contact for key stakeholders in Europe / APAC business unit (e.g. Chief Claims Officer, General Counsel) on litigated and other contentious matters.
- Ensure appropriate and timely reporting in English on legal issues to the Global Head of Litigation, Global Chief Claims Officer and General Counsel, Business Leaders, relevant Boards and Committees and AXA Group as required.
- Lead on significant initiatives/projects, aligned to business strategy and priorities, and working effectively with colleagues across the division as needed.
- Focusing on individual and ‘book of business’ issues, including choice of law/venue and policy terms and conditions with a portfolio view of exposures and opportunities to change the law on appeal.
- Achieving optimal legal outcomes across your portfolio of litigation and disputes.
- Helping to develop the team including effective selection, development, and performance management by driving a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, focused on superior service to customers, operational effectiveness, and deep awareness of expense management.

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:

- Lawyer qualified in a civil law jurisdiction with at least 15 years’ experience.
- Highly desirable - dual-qualified as a lawyer in a common law jurisdiction.
- Broad and extensive legal experience in commercial insurance sector.
- Native / bi-lingual proficiency in a European language and English (written and spoken).
- Proven track record in managing a legal budget.
- Comprehensive understanding of legal and regulatory issues in an international context.
- Recent experience of reporting to and working with senior management.
- Capacity to effectively navigate AXA XL organisational culture, using empathy, collaboration, and inclusion to create business impact and solve problems.
- Demonstrate strategic leadership and role model by setting a high bar for performance, engagement, and commitment. Experience of managing a team of legal experts. Takes initiative. Ability to lead independently.
