Job Description:

The Biorepository Research Associate supports retrospective research projects and patient-consented research studies that utilize archival biologic samples at Intermountain Health. This role provides support to the Biorepository retrospective research team, principal investigators, pathologists, department managers and other staff. This role may also serve as a subject matter expert and trainer within the retrospective research team.

Essential Functions

  • Under the direct supervision of the Research Manager, the Biorepository Research Associate performs all duties of a Biorepository Research Assistant in addition to the following responsibilities:
  • Assist in screening pathology materials and assess eligibility for research protocols and potential for utilization in a retrospective research project. 
  • Route and monitor participant materials for retrospective research projects or for archival tissue requests related to patient-consented research studies conducted by entities other than the Biorepository.
  • Interact with pathologists, histologists, and research teams internal and external to Intermountain Health that require the employee to communicate with tact and diplomacy in high stress environments.
  • Assist with the coordination of permanent pathology and histology material storage and organization of the Biorepository's millions of specimens and other inventory.
  • Safely operate Biorepository / laboratory equipment and comply with all regulations. 
  • Provide training to other team members as needed.
  • Perform other reasonable and relevant duties as assigned.

Job Specific

  • This position will be onsite at the Biorepository and will require a schedule within typical business hours Monday- Friday 8am-5pm.  

Physical Requirements:

Qualifications

  • One year of laboratory or research experience working with human subject samples and materials. Required.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative team environment. Required.
  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Required.
  • Associates Degree or higher. Preferred.
  • Project coordination experience. Preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
