Join our Composite Materials team, within the Research Department based in Nantes, for a 5- to 6-month internship.

Context

Maintaining and repairing offshore metallic structures is a major strategic challenge for shipowners and operators.

In response to operational risks and environmental constraints, cold repairs—such as bonded composite patches—offer an innovative alternative to traditional hot repair methods (cutting, welding).

In this context, Bureau Veritas has launched two collaborative research JIPs:

• StrengthBond Offshore (2019): development of an innovative methodology for assessing and qualifying composite bonded repair design;
• DuraBond Offshore (2024): investigation of the influence of environmental conditions (temperature, seawater exposure, hydrocarbons) on composite patch durability and performance.

This internship builds on these research programs and aims to develop numerical models to evaluate the behaviour of composite patches under thermal loading.

 Your main responsibilities

As an integrated member of the Composite Materials team, you will contribute to applied research work on bonded repair technologies.

Your key tasks will include:

• Performing finite element modelling of equivalent interface specimens for three mechanical test configurations;
• Running simulations at various temperatures and calibrating the models based on experimental data;
• Identifying and characterizing temperature-dependent cohesive laws;
• Developing finite element models of large-scale specimens including cohesive elements;
• Validating numerical results through comparison with experimental values.

What you will learn:

Throughout this internship, you will strengthen:

• Practical expertise in numerical simulation applied to composite structures;
• A deep understanding of interface mechanics, cohesive laws and the behaviour of materials in harsh environments;
• Skills in thermomechanical analysis, model calibration, and experimental–numerical correlation;
• Knowledge of Bureau Veritas rules and offshore standards;
• Experience within an internationally recognized R&D centre.

The internship will rely on the experimental results from both JIPs and on Bureau Veritas simulation tools such as FEMAP/Nastran and/or Abaqus.

Your profile

You are in the final year of an engineering program, with strong knowledge in mechanics (metallic and composite materials), finite element calculation, and solid analytical and synthesis skills.

Knowledge of Bureau Veritas rules is an asset.

You are comfortable communicating in English, both written and spoken, with internal stakeholders and project partners.
