How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn
Domain Adaptation (DA) is a subfield of machine learning and a special case of transfer learning. Both aim to improve the performance of a target model when lacking annotated data by using knowledge from another related domain. However, transfer learning consists in solving machine learning problems where either the tasks and/or domains may change between source and target while in domain adaptations only domains differ, and tasks remain unchanged.

In this context, this internship addresses the challenge of training a target model on one data distribution and applying it to a different data distribution related to another operational environment/context while seeking to generalize a model to a target domain by minimizing the difference between domain distributions.

Some tasks in 5G Networks solved by DA are the following:

• Data Heterogeneity: 5G networks are characterized by diverse deployment scenarios (e.g., urban, rural, industrial), varying traffic patterns, and dynamic channel conditions. Models trained in one environment often perform poorly when deployed in another.
• Labeling Costs: Acquiring and labeling large datasets for every specific 5G scenario is costly and resource intensive. Domain adaptation allows leveraging existing labeled data (e.g., from simulations or specific testbeds) to generalize to new, unlabeled target domains.

Existing domain adaptation approaches can be broadly categorized into methods with shallow and deep architectures. This field is important for 5G networks and future 6G network deployment.

We are seeking a highly motivated intern to participate in scientific studies, potentially leading to a research paper, in collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs researchers. You will investigate Domain Adaptation techniques for use cases of predicting high realistic data in unseen or rare operational environments of 5G.

In this internship, we you will be involved in :

• Learn and get familiar with Generative AIs and 5G/6G. State-of-Art about Domain Adaptation (focus on deep learning techniques).
• Evaluation and implementation of a state-of-the-art solution
• Investigate other relevant popular methods in the field of Domain Adaptation. Theoretical and practical evaluation of the proposed solution by providing a deep analysis and a comparison to previous works.
• Propose and develop a tool enabling what-if studies about B5G/6G AI-RAN
• Duration: 6 months, full time
• Location: In person, in France (Bell Labs / Nokia R&D site of Massy)

Enrolment requirement
: University degree program (Master or PhD)

Key Skills And Experience

• Solid Mathematical background. A good understanding of Machine Learning. Academic background in Deep Learning, Generative models.
• Python: experience with deep learning frameworks ( tensorflow ,  keras ,  Pytorch …), data manipulation and visualization
• Familiarity with 5G/6G would be a plus.
• Clear written and spoken communication skills in both English and French
• Self-driven, research-minded, comfortable in a collaborative environment
• Master Level in Computer Science / Applied Mathematics.
