Short Description: The Disruption Mitigation System (DMS) has the capability to shoot into the plasma up to 27 shattered pellets each containing a different mixture of hydrogen and Neon, the Advanced Protection System is responsible to control the DMS actuation. This internship project is intended for creating algorithms that are able to detect the thermal quench process in real-time and also to be able to infer in real-time the impact that a staggered H pellet injection would have on a given healthy plasma.

Description of tasks:

Task 1: Familiarize with the Plasma Control System Simulation Platform (PCSSP) and JOREK simulations data.
Task 2: Familiarize with the Advanced Protection System function design requirements.
Task 3: Develop algorithms for thermal quench detection.
Task 4: Develop algorithms to assess if firing a staggered H pellets into a given plasma state would be possible without forcing a disruption in the middle of the process.

Internship opportunities are limited to nationals from countries participating in the ITER Project (China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, Russian Federation, and the United States). Their Universities should be also established in the territories of the ITER Members.

 

Please also note that interns are not considered staff members and shall, therefore, not have the status of "Staff" as per the ITER Agreement and the Headquarters Agreement (see more information on these constitutive agreements in Legal Resources).  Neither the ITER Staff Regulations nor the privileges and immunities granted to ITER Organization staff are applicable to interns.  The ITER Organization salary, pension scheme, and social insurance coverage do also not apply.
