Short Description: The internship aims to develop a real-time algorithm to estimate surface and interfacial temperatures of ITER first wall plasma-facing components (PFCs) to be implemented in the plasma control system. The candidate will combine diagnostic data from infrared cameras with thermal models to provide the best estimate of PFCs thermal state. The algorithm will be tested in simulations of ITER scenarios, with possible validation using TCV tokamak experimental data. The project combines numerical modelling of heat diffusion, plasma-material interaction studies, and experimental data analysis.

Description of tasks:

Task 1: Familiarize with tokamak first wall control-oriented models, based on reduced state space representation of heat diffusion.
Task 2: Combine infrared temperature measurements and thermal diffusion models to extract the best estimate of plasma-facing components thermal state.
Task 3: Implement the algorithms in the plasma control system simulation platform for the ITER and TCV tokamaks.
Task 4: Test the scheme for best estimate of the thermal state with experimental data from the TCV tokamak.

Internship opportunities are limited to nationals from countries participating in the ITER Project (China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, Russian Federation, and the United States). Their Universities should be also established in the territories of the ITER Members.

 

Please also note that interns are not considered staff members and shall, therefore, not have the status of "Staff" as per the ITER Agreement and the Headquarters Agreement (see more information on these constitutive agreements in Legal Resources).  Neither the ITER Staff Regulations nor the privileges and immunities granted to ITER Organization staff are applicable to interns.  The ITER Organization salary, pension scheme, and social insurance coverage do also not apply.
