Chief System Engineer (Satellite Projects)

Location:
Toulouse, France

Type:
Full-time, Permanent

About the Role

As a
Lead System Engineer
, you'll act as the
technical lead
for an in-orbit servicing satellite project — owning the end-to-end spacecraft system design, from requirements capture through integration, test, and on-orbit operations. You'll serve as the
chief engineer
of your mission, coordinating multi-disciplinary engineering teams and ensuring technical consistency, performance, and reliability across all subsystems.

You'll work closely with platform, AOCS/GN&C, propulsion, payload, and AIT teams to translate mission needs into implementable technical architectures, supporting system-level reviews and driving technical decisions that shape the success of the mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead System Design & Architecture:
  • Define spacecraft system architecture and manage subsystem interfaces (power, thermal, propulsion, structures, AOCS, communications, and payload).
  • Requirements Engineering:
  • Derive, flow down, and maintain system-level requirements from mission-level objectives through subsystem specifications.
  • System Integration & Validation:
  • Support model-based system engineering activities, performance budgets, and trade-offs; lead system-level reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR).
  • Technical Leadership:
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams across mechanical, thermal, avionics, and propulsion disciplines. Act as the main engineering lead for your mission.
  • Interface Management:
  • Ensure proper interface control and technical alignment between internal teams and suppliers.
  • Verification & Validation:
  • Define test plans, review results, and participate in environmental and functional testing during AIT phases.
  • Mission Operations Support:
  • Contribute to CONOPS definition, on-orbit commissioning planning, and anomaly resolution support.

Requirements

Essential

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering.
  • 5+ years
of experience in spacecraft systems engineering, ideally in small satellite or NewSpace environments.
  • Proven experience leading subsystem or system-level design through at least one full satellite development lifecycle (from concept to launch or operations).
  • Strong understanding of spacecraft subsystems and their interdependencies (AOCS, power, thermal, propulsion, comms, structure).
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g. Jama, DOORS, or similar).
  • Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approaches.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Fluent in English (working proficiency in French a plus).

Desirable

  • Experience working as
    Chief Engineer / Technical Lead
    for a small satellite mission.
  • Background in
    satellite platforms
    or
    in-orbit servicing
    applications.
  • Familiarity with ECSS standards.
  • Experience in
    interface definition
    and
    supplier technical management
    .

Due to the number of applications, if you have not heard feedback after 2 weeks of applying, then unfortunately, you have been unsuccessful.
