- $35.33/hour] depending on experience/license SUMMARY: Start your career with the City of Lewiston as a Equipment Mechanic now and build your skills while working on a diverse fleet of municipal vehicles and equipment—including police vehicles, fire trucks, Plow trucks, and other heavy equipment. This position provides a clear pathway for professional growth, with opportunities to advance through the Mechanic classification based on experience, demonstrated skills, and required licensing. Successful advancement through the classification levels comes with increased pay from a level 5 position to a level 8 position. Have prior experience? REQUIREMENTS:
Qualified candidates must have a valid Maine driver’s license in good standing. Candidates should have a valid Class B CDL or obtain within six (6) months of employment. Must be able to obtain State Motor Vehicle Inspection license (with ADT endorsements) within 12 month trial period. A.

E. certifications are a plus, but must be able to obtain. Applicants must have a high school diploma, or equivalent, with three (3) years experience in mechanical repairs for automotive and light trucks, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Heavy vehicle and/or heavy construction equipment knowledge is a plus Willing to train the right candidate. WORK ACTIVITIES: Inspect/diagnose cars, vans, light trucks and both gasoline and diesel engines to determine repairs needed. Diagnose/repair brakes, transmissions, differentials, universal joints, motors, ignitions, carburetors and hydraulic systems on vehicles, light trucks and trailers. Work with other mechanics to learn diagnostics and repair processes for heavy equipment (including, but not limited to backhoes, tractors, street sweepers, snow loaders, cranes, forklifts, and other large equipment). Install/fit parts, repair cooling systems, and adjust brakes, clutches, ignitions and carburetion. Operate automotive test equipment and power tools, may perform acetylene, cutting and brazing. Once class B license is obtained, operate trucks and equipment and assist with plow operations. Prepare accurate records of work completed and parts used. Participate in ongoing departmental training. Perform other duties as assigned.
