about the role

Global context and problematic of the subject

Quantum optimization, particularly quantum operations research, is attracting increasing interest due to recent improvements in the capabilities of quantum computers. Both the academic world (LIMOS, LIST3N, LIRMM, etc.), and the industrial world (EDF, ERICSON, TotalEnergy, etc.) are showing growing interest in it. Indeed, it has been demonstrated in particular, through theory and practice, that quantum optimization can be used to boost the best classical algorithms available, or be used alone to solve sub-problems of a more global optimization problem. In this context, Orange is interested in using such approaches to resolve use cases of interest to the company.

Scientific goal – results and obstacles to be overcome

The objective of the thesis is to explore one or more quantum optimization approaches to help solve combinatorial mathematical optimization problems identified as of interest for Orange. Orange already has cutting-edge expertise in solving these problems with traditional methods (mainly via operational research and/or AI). The method developed in this thesis will make it possible to affirm or refute a significant improvement in calculation times and/or performances using quantum calculation (from a theoretical and/or application point of view).

Expectations :

• Acquire a good knowledge of the major combinatorial optimization problems used in telecoms, in particular those for which it is possible to reduce the problem to an NP-complete problem present in the literature

• Acquire a good knowledge of the models and algorithms used in quantum optimization

• A state of the art will be requested on these two points, with a part devoted to quantum approaches already used for telecom problems

• Propose one or more approaches making it possible to “boost”, in a theoretical and/or application manner, current classic algorithms (hybrid or pure approach)

• Carry out the implementation on quantum simulators, and where possible on a quantum computer in partnership with a specialized company

about you

Training required (master’s degree, engineering degree, doctorate, scientific and technical field, etc.)

Research master’s degree or 3rd year of engineering school in computer science or applied mathematics with strong training in operational research / classical optimization and, if possible, knowledge in quantum optimization

Desired experiences (internships, etc.)

An internship or experience in quantum optimization would be a plus

additional information

Quantum computing is booming, notably thanks to the progress made in quantum computers. The field of research represented by quantum optimization, through its innovative aspect (breaking with classical approaches), offers a field of exploration that is already very broad, growing and exciting.

The thesis will, among other things, offer the doctoral student the opportunity to access and use a quantum computer.

Finally, it is very likely that a collaborative project will emerge quite quickly from the work resulting from quantum computing at Orange.
