Your role is to conduct a thesis on "A study of post-quantum public key schemes."

Global context and problem statement: It is anticipated that within 5 to 15 years, efficient quantum processors will emerge, posing a threat to the security of public key signature schemes based on large number factorization and discrete logarithm calculations. It is primarily for this reason that the NIST (American standardization organization) plans to replace current public key signature schemes and has organized a call for proposals to select future standards. Orange has proposed two candidate schemes. Orange must maintain expertise in securing communications and data (storage and transit) to preserve sovereignty in the field of e-transactions.

Scientific objective, results, and challenges: The objective is to have the most efficient signature schemes possible (in terms of signature and key size, key and signature generation time).

The objective of the thesis is to analyze and evaluate the current candidates (those submitted to the NIST primarily). On paper, the best candidates will be those that withstand the tests of the best-known attacks and provide the best trade-offs in terms of size and time (on different significant execution platforms). Another part of the objective is to study and improve known attacks, and even conceive new ones. Similarly, it will be necessary to study and optimize the code's adherence to possible execution platforms, both in terms of performance and resistance to attacks through hidden channels (leakage of information during execution).

Finally, another objective is to provide theoretical security proofs related to the signature schemes, such as resistance to signature forgery attacks.

The main challenges revolve around mastering and deeply understanding the proposed post-quantum cryptographic primitives (as per the NIST) and designing attacks and security proofs for these schemes.

The topic of asymmetric cryptography is complex and currently being challenged by the advent of quantum computers. Post-quantum cryptography aims to solve digital security problems such as confidentiality, integrity, and authentication, but it remains a vast and evolving field. The call for proposals for signature schemes by NIST is evidence of the necessity and difficulty in designing such schemes. This thesis aims to contribute to the emergence of new schemes, deepen our knowledge in the areas of design, cryptanalysis, implementation, and optimization, as well as provide proofs. It will also provide an opportunity to use tools such as formal calculations, proof modeling, programming, and collaborate with numerous researchers in the field.
