PhD : Productivity of Downs herring under global change

Deadline for applications: 06/05/2024The Channel & North Sea Fisheries Research Unit (Unité Halieutique Manche Mer du Nord, HMMN) is investigating the dynamics of marine fisheries, ecosystems and biodiversity, subject to the pressure of fisheries and other human activities in a global change context, as well as evaluating management strategies to mitigate the impact of these pressures.
HMMN activities are structured into three broad research themes :(1)
Individuals, populations and ecological niches, (2) Communities, trophic networks and biodiversity and (3) Fleets, fisheries and management scenarios, all supported by three technological facilities:
a Sclerochronology National Center, a Trophic Ecology Platform, and a Zoo- (and Ichtyo-) plankton Taxonomy and Ecology Platform.
SummaryNorth Sea herring (Clupea harengus) is a key species for the northern France cultural heritage and fisheries socio-economic sector.
Herring represents a highly valuable source of revenue for the pelagic fleets targeting the Downs population, which spawns in winter in the eastern English Channel and the southern North Sea.
In addition, herring plays a pivotal role in the functioning of the trophic network, both as a zooplankton predator and as a prey for piscivorous predators.
The overarching objective of this PhD project is to better understand the reasons underlying the sustained low productivity of North Sea herring, by specifically investigating the processes driving the survival of the major component of this stock (the Downs population), which spawns in winter in the eastern English Channel and the southern North Sea, in a global change context.
This PhD project has three sub-objectives:1)Production of zooplanktonic prey fields by combining biogeochemical modeling and available data ;2) Modelling the dynamics of Downs herring winter-spawning migrations ;3) Modelling the biotic and abiotic mechanisms driving the growth and survival of Downs herring larvae.
