Amazon Web Services is seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer, Real-Time to develop deterministic real-time firmware for SST power-conversion control, PWM generation, diagnostics and protection-related functions.
As an Embedded Firmware Engineer, Real-Time you will develop bare-metal/FreeRTOS C/C++ firmware for PWM and conversion control on DSP/FPGA, delivered independently. You will adhere to ISR timing budgets, fault-detection latency and safe-state transitions coordinated with functional-safety requirements. You will debug real-time interaction between firmware, FPGA, control and power stages and supports HIL and system validation.
About AIS
AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
Firmware Development
- Develop bare-metal and/or FreeRTOS firmware in C/C++.
- Implement real-time PWM and power-conversion control drivers on DSP/FPGA platforms.
- Implement deterministic interfaces to sensors, control algorithms and hardware protection.
Diagnostics & Fault Handling
- Develop embedded diagnostics and monitoring functions.
- Implement fault detection and fault-state handling in coordination with functional-safety requirements.
- Support watchdog and system-health mechanisms where allocated to embedded software.
Integration & Verification
- Bring up firmware on prototype hardware.
- Debug real-time interactions between firmware, FPGA, control algorithms and power electronics.
- Support hardware-in-the-loop and system-level validation.
SST System Alignment
- Implement deterministic state-machine, protection, overload, fault recovery and power-sharing functions required by the SST system behavior.
- Support fast response to LVDC disturbances and coordinated ESS behavior during MVAC ride-through events.
A day in the life
As an Embedded Firmware Engineer, Real-Time, you'll focus on developing robust firmware for power-conversion control systems using C/C++ on DSP and FPGA platforms. Your day might include writing and optimizing real-time PWM drivers, implementing fault-detection algorithms that meet strict timing requirements, or debugging complex interactions between firmware, hardware, and control systems. You'll collaborate with hardware engineers and control specialists to bring up new prototype systems, validate designs through hardware-in-the-loop testing, and ensure your code meets the deterministic timing budgets critical to system safety. You may also contribute to solving real-time challenges specific to power-sharing and system recovery during grid disturbances.
About The Team
We are the team that keeps the cloud running. AWS Infrastructure Services designs, plans, delivers, and operates all AWS global infrastructure—the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that enable our customers to access the innovation they depend on. Our team tackles some of the most complex engineering challenges in the industry, and we're building solutions that scale across data centers worldwide. We're looking for collaborative engineers who are curious, committed to continuous learning, and excited about contributing to infrastructure that powers businesses globally. You'll work alongside experienced firmware developers, hardware engineers, and control systems specialists who are passionate about solving deterministic real-time challenges. Together, we're advancing how AWS manages power conversion and system reliability at scale.
Why AWS?
