RETHINK the WAY

THINGS ARE MADE

NexusAM is transforming metal additive manufacturing by tackling its biggest barrier: the prohibitive cost of part qualification. Our platform cuts qualification time and costs while ensuring traceable, consistent quality.

Backend Developer

About Nexus

Nexus is an ambitious seed stage startup building the intelligence layer of metal 3D printing. Our platform,NEXUS, takes multi-modal sensor data and generates actionable insights for quality assurance. Formed at Imperial College London by leading experts in the field of additive manufacturing and artificial intelligence, we’re trusted by aerospace, defence, and medical manufacturers, and we're backed by leading investors. We're on a mission to accelerate manufacturing of high-value safety-critical parts with additive manufacturing.

The Opportunity

As our Backend Engineer, you must have experience designing and building large and complex (yet maintainable) systems, and you should be able to do this in about three times the pace most competent people think possible. You’ll work on the core of our platform: the C++ systems that ingest, process, and store high-rate,multi-modal sensor data from metal 3D printing machines to generate actionable outputs. Our software runs where our customers build parts, inside industrial factories, so performance and reliability are critical. Your work will directly enable aerospace, medical, and automotive manufacturers to produce next generation components.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design and develop our core C++ libraries for high-throughput sensor data ingestion, processing, and storage
  • Build and maintain Python bindings and APIs that expose backend functionality to our ML and application teams
  • Real time data streaming through WebSockets.
  • Maintain robust cross-platform builds, packaging, and deployment for customer environments (Windows and Linux)
  • Implement robust error handling, logging, and monitoring for production systems running unattended at customer sites

Required Expertise

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience writing production C++(C++17 or later)
  • Strong grasp of systems fundamentals: concurrency and multithreading, memory management, and performance profiling
  • Experience designing software that handles large datasets or high-rate data streams
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities with a bias toward practical solutions
  • Eligible to work in the UK

Nice to Have

  • Understanding of WebSockets and real-time data streaming between backend services and clients
  • Experience with pybind11 or similar binding frameworksKnowledge of scientific data formats, particularly HDF5
  • Experience with very large point clouds or volumetric data
  • Background in signal processing, computer vision, or s ensor systems
  • Experience with scientific or industrial software development
  • Startup experience or demonstrated ability to thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced environments

Why Join Nexus

  • Impact: Your work will directly enable more sustainable, efficient manufacturing of critical components
  • Ownership: Your work shapes the core software architecture
  • Team: Expect talented, motivated, intense, and interesting co-workers
  • Benefits:
  • Competitive salary
  • Comprehensive healthcare package
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Central London location with excellent facilities(in-person role)
  • Regular team events and learning opportunities

Real-Time Monitoring

Our proprietary AI technology stack combines real time process monitoring with predictive intelligence, dramatically accelerating the qualification process.

Accelerated Qualification

Built on breakthrough research from leading institutions and validated on production systems, our technology targets qualification cost reductions of over 50% while ensuring consistent, traceable quality.

Scalable Impact

We're enabling manufacturers across aerospace, medical, and energy sectors to unlock the full potential of additive manufacturing at scale.
