What is Asobo Studio?
The answer from David Dedeine, co-founder and Creative Director of the studio, in this video.
In short: Innovation x Immersion x Emotion
For more than 20 years we have been behind 26 games for PC and consoles, among them well-known licences, original games and innovative creations.
Today we work with more than 300 colleagues on Microsoft Flight Simulator, the A Plague Tale franchise and HoloForge, the studio's XR department.
Our aim as a studio is to create exceptional interactive experiences that stay with the people who play them.
Pursuing that aim is our source of inspiration and satisfaction every day. It pushes us to always do better, to progress and to go beyond ourselves: that is what guides us and gives meaning to everything we do here.
Why joining us in this particular role is a great opportunity
This is a key position where your artistic, narrative and technical expertise will have a direct impact on the player's emotional experience. You will help shape the cinematic vision of an ambitious project while working alongside an experienced and passionate team, the team behind the A Plague Tale licence.
It is also a rare opportunity to take a central place in building the storytelling of the game, working closely with the project's main creative decision-makers.
Your team
Within the Cinematics department and under the supervision of the Game Director, you will lead a team of 6 Cinematic Artists and work in close collaboration with the Game Design, Narrative Design, Writing and Animation teams.
You will be responsible for the vision and the quality of the game's cinematic sequences, while overseeing the whole cinematic production pipeline, from the design of the scenes through to their delivery to the animation teams.
Your missions
- You will define and oversee the artistic and narrative vision of the project's cinematics.
- You will enrich the visual writing, the staging intentions and the emotional dynamics of the sequences, in close collaboration with the Game Director, the Lead Writer and the Lead Narrative Designer.
- You will occasionally handle the staging of other narrative content, such as in-game storytelling, contextual dialogue or interactive sequences.
- You will anticipate and prepare the motion capture shoots, in particular the planning and the footage breakdown of the scenes.
- You will take part in casting decisions, briefing the actors and directing them during the capture sessions.
- You will be the studio's main point of contact for the external motion capture studio and will ensure the quality of that collaboration.
- You will make sure the cinematics are integrated smoothly into the game experience and that the transitions between gameplay and narration are of high quality.
- You will work with the technical teams to evolve the tools and the production pipeline, while proactively identifying opportunities for improvement.
- You will support, bring together and grow a team of 6 Cinematic Artists, while maintaining a high standard for the quality of the deliverables.
- You will oversee the whole cinematic production, from storyboards and previsualisation through to MAS and layouts, and will follow the sequences through to their handover to the animation team.
The fundamentals for succeeding in this role
- You have solid experience directing cinematics in the games industry, ideally on productions with a strong narrative dimension.
- You have mastered the principles of staging, storyboarding, cinematic grammar and previsualisation.
- You have an excellent feel for gameplay, pacing, cameras and the emotional construction of scenes, and you know how to turn a creative intention into a memorable visual experience.
- You understand the constraints of real time, of 3D engines and of modern production pipelines.
- You have mastered MotionBuilder or have already worked with the tool.
- You have mastered integration into a real-time game engine (Unreal Engine, Unity or a proprietary engine).
- You have an excellent knowledge of games, you follow developments in the market and you take an interest in the narrative and cinematic references that shape the industry.
- You know how to inspire, support and develop a creative team while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
