Overview

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Northern Illinois University ( NIU ) anticipates hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in any area of Chemistry, however, preference will be given to candidates with an emphasis in the broad area of organic chemistry. The candidate is expected to establish a robust, externally funded research program that involves graduate and undergraduate student researchers. The ideal candidate will be able to teach undergraduate courses in organic chemistry and graduate courses in organic or related areas of chemistry. Experience working with diverse populations of students as well as evidence of inclusive and engaging teaching practices are highly desirable.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Department occupies part of two buildings, La Tourette Hall and Faraday Hall. There is a substantial research infrastructure within the department, including state-of-the-art NMR instrumentation.

The university’s Division of Research and Innovation Partnerships supports a growing external funding portfolio, approaching $60 million in 2024, and research infrastructure across campus, including the Office of Research Development which supports new and junior faculty to build their research programs, the Molecular Analysis Core ( MAC ) facility which is a state-of-the-art chemical analysis laboratory focused on mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopy and the Center for Research Computing and Data that recently added a $1.2 million high performance computing facility. The MAC facility is located in La Tourette Hall with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. This facility is available for the new assistant professor to use to support their research program.

Position Summary

The Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry will establish a robust, externally funded research program that involves graduate and undergraduate student researchers. The faculty member will be able to teach undergraduate courses in organic chemistry and graduate courses in organic or related areas of chemistry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Establish a vigorous, externally funded program in organic chemistry or related area
• Teach undergraduate courses in organic chemistry for majors and non-majors
• Teach graduate courses in organic chemistry or in other areas of chemistry
• Mentor graduate and undergraduate student research projects
• Serve effectively at the department, college, and university levels, as well as with the community.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Doctorate in chemistry or a closely related field.
• A minimum of one-year postdoctoral experience.
• Demonstrated research and publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
• Potential for supervising graduate and undergraduate research students.
• Evidence of teaching experience in classroom or laboratory settings.

• Ability to teach, mentor, and support students from diverse and varied backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Evidence of teaching experience in classroom or laboratory settings.
• History of engagement and service to the profession at the local, state, and/or national level.
• Evidence of potential for securing external funding
• Ability to teach undergraduate courses in organic chemistry for chemistry majors and non-majors and graduate courses in organic or related areas of chemistry.
