The Challenge: Building the “Gold Standard” for Private Equity

Private equity still runs largely on Excel and disconnected processes. At Roundtable, we build the infrastructure that lets thousands of investors co-invest in private companies.

Roundtable is growing, and so is the engineering team. We have 15 senior full-stack engineers in 2 squads today, and we’re opening a third. As Lead Developer, you’ll run a squad of 4 to 5 engineers. You’ll own how it delivers, how its engineers grow, and the quality of what it ships to production. You’ll work closely with product managers, with direct support from our CTO and CPO, who are both founders.

Your Mission

This isn’t a pure management role. You’ll lead the squad’s execution and delivery and remain its technical reference. You’ll split your time between writing code and leading people, and the balance will shift as the squad grows. The goal is to help Roundtable scale and to help the engineers around you grow with it.

What you’ll do

  • Squad leadership. You run the squad day to day with your PM, covering planning, priorities, trade-offs and delivery. When the roadmap doesn’t fit the time available, you decide what to cut and explain why.

  • Growing engineers. You run 1:1s, give honest feedback, set clear expectations and follow through on growth plans. You spot potential early and give people problems slightly bigger than they think they can handle.

  • Technical direction. You set the technical bar for the squad. You challenge designs, help with hard problems, and keep the codebase healthy while the product moves fast.

  • Architecture. We don’t follow a named architecture style. We structure code around business logic with clear entry points, and you keep it that way.

  • Quality and reliability. Your squad ships features that move money. You own code review standards, testing (Vitest, Playwright), observability (Datadog, Sentry, OpenTelemetry) and the incident process.

  • Hands-on engineering. You still write code where your experience matters most. That means complex financial workflows, migrations such as our ongoing move from GraphQL to tRPC, and performance-critical paths.

  • AI in the workflow. You help the squad use LLM-assisted tools where they save time, and you make sure they don’t replace thinking. Engineers stay responsible for the code they ship.

    Core Stack

    • Core. Node.js and TypeScript everywhere, in strict mode with no any.

    • Data. PostgreSQL with Prisma, and Redis with BullMQ for critical job queues.

    • API. tRPC with Zod, for type safety from the database to the frontend.

    • Ops. GCP, Turborepo, OpenTelemetry and Datadog.

    • Quality. Vitest, Playwright, and Zod for runtime validation at every boundary.

Who you are

Experienced engineer. You have 7+ years building products with TypeScript and Node.js, full-stack or backend-leaning.Proven lead. You’ve spent at least 2 years leading engineers as a Lead Dev or Tech Lead, and you can point to people you helped grow.Player-coach. You enjoy coaching and coding. Coaching doesn’t frustrate you, and writing code doesn’t make you feel you’re neglecting your team.Direct and kind. You give honest feedback early and take it just as well.Pragmatic. You care about good engineering without dogma. You know when to go deep and when shipping something good enough is the right call.Precise. You know that bugs on a financial platform cost people real money, and you build a team culture around that.
