About the Project – ITER & Westinghouse’s Role
ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is a landmark international collaboration aiming to prove the viability of nuclear fusion as a sustainable and carbon‑free energy source. Located in Southern France, ITER brings together 35 countries to build the world’s largest tokamak fusion reactor.
Westinghouse Electric Company has been awarded a major contract for the sectors welding (SW) of the ITER Vacuum Vessel (VV), a critical component of the fusion reactor. This involves:
- Welding together nine massive sectors of the VV using advanced TIG techniques.
- Mechanized and manual welding operations, including robotic arms and precision milling.
- Rigorous quality control and non‑destructive testing (VT, PT, LT, RT, UT).
- Strict adherence to cleanliness, safety, and radiation protection standards.
This multi‑year project presents significant technical and organizational challenges, requiring robust EHS oversight to ensure compliance, safety, and performance excellence.
