You will own the physical drone: mechanics, electronics, firmware, integration, all the way to a swimming prototype, plus the software tools that run the workshop and the trials. A rare role for someone who loves the machine shop and the soldering iron as much as the code.
What you will do
- Mechanical design: CAD of the airframe (hydrodynamic hull, high-pressure sealing), rapid prototyping (3D printing, machining), iterating toward a design manufacturable at scale.
- Electronics: PCB design, sensor integration (IMU, sonar, camera, pressure), power management, and low-signature electric propulsion.
- Firmware: low-level embedded software (drivers, sensor buses, motor control, RF telemetry).
- Integration & testing: prototype assembly, test benches, pool then sea trial campaigns.
- Software tools: telemetry dashboards, trial-data analysis scripts, internal tooling, in Python / web. Here, AI assistants are an integral part of how we work.
What we are looking for
- 5+ years in hardware development, with at least one complex physical product designed and shipped end to end (drone, robot, embedded device…).
- Strong mechanical CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent) and rapid prototyping.
- Solid embedded electronics experience: designing or modifying PCBs, oscilloscope debugging, sensor integration.
- Firmware in C/C++ on microcontrollers (STM32, ESP32, or equivalent).
- Comfortable with Python and web development for internal tools.
- Pragmatic and fast: you would rather have a drone swimming this week than a perfect design next month.
Nice to have
- Maritime or subsea experience: sealing, corrosion, acoustics, hydrodynamics.
- Defense, aerospace, or automotive background (reliability and cost constraints).
- Design-for-manufacturing (DFM) experience. Battery systems and their integration.
- From CAD to the sea: you design, build, and test the whole drone, not a sub-part of a subsystem.
- Direct impact: small founding team, you are one of the first engineers, and your technical choices become the product's architecture.
- Speed: hardware iterations in weeks, regular sea trials.
- Team: founders trained at ENS, MIT, and NASA.
- Package: competitive salary + meaningful early-stage equity.
