Offer Description

The Institute of Environmental Geosciences (IGE) is a public research laboratory jointly supervised by the CNRS/INSU, IRD, Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), and Grenoble INP.

The institute brings together around 240 people, including 145 permanent staff (researchers, faculty members, and engineers) and approximately 95 PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and fixed-term staff. Each year, the institute also welcomes several dozen interns and visiting scientists. IGE is based across two sites on the Grenoble university campus (MCP, OSUG-B, and Glacio sites).

IGE is one of the main laboratories of the Grenoble Observatory of Earth Sciences (OSUG), a federative structure of the CNRS/INSU.

You will be supervised by Florent Gimbert, Research Scientist within the CryoDyn team. The CryoDyn team aims to better understand and describe the processes controlling ice dynamics, in order to improve our understanding and prediction of the evolution of glaciers, ice sheets, and sea ice.

  • Deploy seismological equipment in the field, in collaboration with the University of Sheffield and the Asiaq Institute in Greenland
  • Analyse and combine seismological data with other observations, including field-measured discharge, modelled surface melt, and subglacial water pressure
  • Interpret observations and model the physical processes associated with flow turbulence and sediment transport
  • Extrapolate the results to marine-terminating glaciers, where direct observations are more challenging
  • Put the results into perspective to improve our understanding of the Greenland Ice Sheet's response to climate change

Skills in seismology and fluid mechanics

  • Fieldwork skills, particularly for equipment deployment campaigns
  • Good command of English, both written and spoken
  • Ability to work in a team and in international collaborations
  • Interest in glaciology and climate change issues
  • Experience or confidence working in mountainous environments would be an asset

Desired qualification: PhD in geophysics, mechanics, or mechanical physics
