Description
Amazon Web Services is seeking a Power Electronics Reliability Engineer to own the functional-safety case and the reliability/qualification program for the SST control, protection and power-conversion system.
As a Power Electronics Reliability Engineer you will: 1) define IEC 61508 safety functions and safe-state behavior (STO/SS1/SLS), 2) plan/run HALT/HASS and qualification per the V&V strategy, and 3) deliver a defined safety and reliability scope. You will drive hazard analysis, diagnostic/watchdog requirements, fault-state management, failure analysis and root-cause, and derive MTBF/MTTR and reliability metrics with the required diagnostic coverage. You will maintain safety requirements and traceability, review implementation evidence, coordinate critical-component supplier qualification and corrective actions, and resolve issues across disciplines.
About AIS
AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
Safety architecture
Apply IEC 61508 principles to safety-related embedded and control functions.
Define safety functions and safe-state behavior.
Coordinate safety requirements with system, FPGA, controls and embedded software architectures.
Protection mechanisms
Define and review STO, SS1 and SLS functions as applicable to the architecture.
Define watchdog and embedded diagnostic requirements.
Develop and review fault-state management strategies.
Safety lifecycle & verification
Maintain safety requirements and traceability.
Support safety analysis and verification planning.
Review implementation evidence and safety-related test results.
Coordinate safety issue resolution across engineering disciplines.
Qualification
Plan and execute HALT/HASS and other qualification activities identified in the V&V strategy.
Define reliability stresses and qualification conditions with engineering teams.
Track qualification status and evidence.
Failure analysis
Perform and coordinate failure analysis.
Identify recurring failure modes and recommend corrective actions.
Feed reliability findings back into design margins, safe-state behavior and component selection.
Reliability metrics
Track MTBF/MTTR and other reliability indicators.
Identify reliability and safety risks in critical components and subsystems.
Use test and field data to prioritize reliability and safety improvements.
Supplier follow-up
Coordinate critical-component supplier follow-up.
Review supplier qualification and reliability evidence.
Support corrective actions for component-related failures.
SST System Alignment
Align the role with the system safety framework without treating SIL2 as a system requirement. system specification references NFPA, UL and IEEE electrical-safety standards; IEC 61508/SIL targets should be established by the product safety strategy if applicable.
Cover functional protection, fault-state behavior, safe restart inhibition, insulation-monitoring interactions, arc-flash considerations and diagnostic coverage.
Translate system 15+ year design-life and environmental/structural expectations into reliability stresses and qualification plans.
Include redundancy/catcher behavior, degradation warnings, fault recovery, thermal derating and critical MV/HV insulation components in both safety and reliability analysis.
A day in the life
In this role, you'll focus on establishing safety architectures and reliability programs for our Solid State Tra
