NYU Paris is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach the following undergraduate course in Art History**:The Glory of Medieval France: Museums & Monuments in Paris and the Region**

This course examines medieval art and architecture of France through an exploration of the monuments and moments that define our understanding of the period. The course moves from the Early Christian Church to late Gothic to help students gain an understanding of medieval France through an analysis of monuments in their historic and cultural contexts. From the portals of Notre-Dame of Paris to the collections of the Musée de Cluny, we will seek to decode the symbolic language of medieval sculpture and architecture. Pairing texts and monuments, we will consider the writings of authors such as the Abbot Suger as we inspect his church of Saint-Denis, or as we study liturgical objects in the collections of the Louvre. Throughout the course we will consider how visual art during the Middles Ages helped shape cultural identity and express the political and religious agendas of the age. The course ends with a study of E.E. Viollet-le-Duc’s work during the 19th century, together with his legacy and role in constructing our notions of medieval art and architecture. Students will be encouraged to make ample use of resources in and around Paris.

Teaching commences in September 2023; courses meet for 3 hours a week for a 14.5 week term.

Des portails de Notre-Dame de Paris aux collections du Musée de Cluny, nous chercherons à décoder le langage symbolique de la sculpture et de l'architecture médiévales. En associant textes et monuments, nous examinerons les écrits d'auteurs tels que l'abbé Suger en inspectant son église de Saint-Denis, ou en étudiant les objets liturgiques des collections du Louvre. Tout au long du cours, nous examinerons comment l'art visuel au Moyen Âge a contribué à façonner l'identité culturelle et à exprimer les programmes politiques et religieux de l'époque. Le cours se termine par une étude de l'œuvre de E.E. Viollet-le-Duc au XIXe siècle, ainsi que de son héritage et de son rôle dans la construction de nos notions d'art et d'architecture médiévaux. Les étudiants seront encouragés à faire un usage intensif des ressources dans et autour de Paris._

**Qualifications**:
**The appointed person will have full responsibility for teaching and coordinating the course. The course is taught in a seminar, discussion-based style and offered to undergraduate students, mostly in their second or third year of study. All students are NYU students enrolled in NYU degrees in New York, Abu Dhabi or Shanghai who come to study at NYU Paris for one semester. Classes take place at our Academic Centre in Paris.**

Le cours est enseigné en forme de séminaire et est offert aux étudiants de premier cycle, pour la plupart dans leur deuxième ou troisième année d'études. Les étudiants sont en premier cycle et viennent des campus de NYU à New York, Shanghai et Abu Dhabi afin d'étudier à NYUParis pour un semestre. Le cours a lieu dans notre centre académique à Paris._**
