SuperGrid Institute brings together 180 employees, of 28 different nationalities who work together within a dynamic environment in the city of Lyon. As an independent research and innovation centre, we are dedicated to developing technologies for the future power transmission system, the “supergrid”, including HVDC & MVDC technologies.

**General context**

The number of power sources connected to grids though power electronic converters is growing (wind generators, photovoltaic power plants, fully-fed variable-speed hydro power plants ). Several studies like the MIGRATE European project showed that this leads to a reduction of grid inertia which make necessary new control schemes for these power converters and high-power low-duration energy storage systems (several tens of MW during a few seconds). SuperGrid Institute preformed previous works on these two directions: _grid-forming_ control of converters and energy storage in modular multilevel converters (MMC).

**Objectives / Missions**
- Modify existing models to model a grid-forming controlled MMC embedding energy storage systems (EMT and potentially phasor)
- Test the EMT (and potentially phasor) model in a simplistic test case (AC system modelled as a single equivalent generator).
- Specify the needed energy storage system
- Test the EMT model in a complex case study
