**Experiment Support and Instrument Technician**

**Context**
As an experiment support and instrument technician, you will be responsible for the operation and development of experimental equipment and for providing support for experiments conducted at the ILL.

You will act as technical contact for the instrument D11 within the Large Scale Structures group (LSS) and you will collaborate with the other technicians of the group. You will work closely with the scientists in charge of the instruments (experimental stations) you will be assigned to. Depending on the needs of the different instrument groups, you may be asked to work in parallel on other instruments or laboratories within the Science Division.

D11 is a small-angle scattering instrument devoted to soft matter studies, with one of the highest turnovers at the ILL and experiments lasting one to three days.

**Your tasks**
Within the LSS group, working in close collaboration with the instrument team, you will have the following duties:

- Carry out maintenance, troubleshooting and repair work on the instruments and associated equipment
- Assist in the coordination of large technical projects
- Assist in-house and visiting scientists with the preparation of their experiments and advise instrument users on technical matters concerning sample environment and instrumentation during experiments
- Produce drawings (in SolidWorks), tune equipment and maintain technical documentations
- Participate in the design and development of equipment for D11 and other instruments of the LSS group or the ILL soft matter laboratories in collaboration with other ILL services
- Ensure compliance with instrument safety regulations, particularly those related to nuclear safety.

**Your profile**
- You have a Level 4/5 qualification (e.g. BTEC HNC/HND or equivalent) in applied physics and instrumentation or equivalent, with a few years of professional experience
- You are at ease with the use of commercial electronics and conventional physical measurement methods, such as optical, electrical or mechanical methods, for measuring pressures, liquid and gas flow control, etc.
- You can perform maintenance on conventional equipment, including laboratory apparatus
- You have a practical approach to your work and are keen to learn new skills
- You are capable of working independently on a wide variety of projects
- You possess the necessary interpersonal skills to work with in-house and visiting scientists.
