**Mission**:
In the infrared (IR) domain, the most commonly used photon detectors in astrophysics are matrix detectors made of HgCdTe absorbing material grown on a CdZnTe substrate. The typical pixel pitch is around fifteen microns. The manufacturing of such detectors is a globally recognized expertise of CEA-Leti (Laboratory for Electronics and Information Technology) in Grenoble. The Department of Astrophysics (DAp) at CEA/IRFU is also a historical reference in the field of space instrumentation and detector characterization.

At DAp, test benches have been developed to characterize in detail the detectors manufactured by CEA/Leti. One of the key parameters for instrument development is the Pixel Spatial Response (PSR), which characterizes the response of an elementary pixel in the array to the very localized generation of carriers within the absorbing material at various locations within the pixel. This response depends on the pixel's geometry and the electronic transport properties of the absorbing material. In practice, the PSR of a pixel more closely resembles a 2D Gaussian, as carriers generated within one pixel can diffuse and be collected in neighboring pixels.

A direct method for measuring the PSR relies on projecting a point light source much smaller than the pixel size. In practice, this measurement can be challenging to implement. Resolution is limited by mechanical aspects, and the spot size is constrained by the diffraction limit of the objective. Additionally, to characterize the PSR of infrared quantum detectors, it is necessary to work in a cryogenic environment, which complicates the setup of the measurement. Alternative methods are based on a direct measurement of the PTF (Pixel Transfer Function, in other words, the Fourier transform of the PSR). In this case, the detector is illuminated with known spatial frequencies. Several methods fall into this category, including the Young's hole method, the Lloyd's mirror method, and the Continuously Self Imaging Grating (CSIG) method [4]. The latter is currently under development at DAp, in collaboration with ONERA (the French aerospace research agency). However, similar to direct PSR measurements, these methods remain complex to develop at the cryogenic operating temperatures of the detectors.

At DAp, we propose to study a new method for measuring pixel response, based on the use of X-rays. The interaction of X-ray photons with the pixel's material will generate highly localized carriers within the pixel. Locating this interaction within the affected pixel would allow us to determine the PSR. Unlike the methods described earlier, this method would offer ease of implementation, but it shifts the complexity to data analysis. This method does not allow for the experimental control of the photon's interaction position within the detector array. Determining the PSR from the impact location relies on assumptions related to the underlying physical phenomena.

The first method used to extract the PSR from the irradiation data, relying on barycenter measurement will be reenforce and alternative analysis method will also be tested. Besides, the first studies lead during the internship suffered from poor knowledge on detector PSR models. We then propose to include simulation studies, to provide a deep understanding of the detector PSR. The simulations will rely on finite element methods and Monte Carlo approaches.

This work will be conducted within the framework of a collaboration with CEA/Leti. The student will be able to leverage the instrumental expertise of DAp and the technological knowledge of detectors from CEA/Leti.
