The new code APOLLO3® is currently under development at CEA, whose main goal is to provide a unified deterministic tool that includes the capabilities of the French lattice and core codes of the previous generation, respectively APOLLO2, ECCO, CRONOS2 and ERANOS, with a modern and flexible software architecture platform for R&D and industrial activities.
The objective of this internship is to model at the lattice scale the PWR assemblies of an international benchmark proposed by the NEA/OECD, the “TVA Watts Bar Unit 1 Multi-Physics Multi-Cycle Depletion Benchmark”, using a Python user interface of APOLLO3®. These assemblies are characterized by the presence of rods made of PYREX (borosilicate glass) which is a neutron burnable absorber and requires a special treatment in fuel depletion calculations, as the reactivity and the homogenized cross sections strongly depends on the concentrations of this material under exposure.
The work will involve the choice of the self-shielding options to generate effective values of multi-group cross sections, and the realization of neutron flux calculations that provide the weighting function for cross-section homogenization. These results will be compared to the ones obtained by the predecessor APOLLO2 as well as the continuous-energy Monte Carlo code TRIPOLI-4® developed at CEA, in order to verify and validate the lattice model developed with APOLLO3®.
