Offer Description
The position is based at the Institut de Neurosciences de la Timone (INT, UMR 7289, CNRS/Aix-Marseille University) in Marseille, in the team led by Bruno Giordano. The PhD student will work closely with researchers, engineers and PhD students involved in auditory neuroscience, MEG/SEEG and computational modelling, and collaborate with European partners in the NASCE project (particularly the Maastricht team for ultra-high-field MRI and AI modelling).
The PhD student will be enrolled in a doctoral programme at Aix-Marseille University as part of the NeuroSchool programme. Regular interactions with team members in Maastricht are planned (videoconference meetings, joint workshops).
As part of the ERC-Synergy NASCE project (“Natural Auditory SCEnes in Humans and Machines”), this PhD aims to understand how brain regions interact to analyse and interpret real-world auditory scenes comprising environmental sounds and multiple sound sources.
The PhD student will study brain connectivity and the dynamics of auditory representations using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) data. The work will focus on information exchange between brain regions during listening, with particular attention to the acoustic and semantic dimensions of scenes and the influence of context and attention.
Activities will include:
- Preprocessing and quality control of MEG and SEEG data, and analysis of their temporal and spectral dynamics;
- Implementing and developing connectivity analyses and multivariate methods to characterise interactions between brain regions and representations of auditory scenes;
- Developing, testing and documenting reusable Python analysis pipelines, with appropriate validation procedures and statistical tests;
- Contributing to experiment preparation and MEG data acquisition, in collaboration with team members and project partners;
- Contributing to the writing of scientific articles and presenting results at project meetings and conferences.
