The role & responsibilities

Back Market is looking for a Staff Mobile Engineer to play a pivotal role in our strategic app-first approach set for the upcoming year. Our goal is to enhance user engagement by accelerating the development of innovative features and optimizing the overall app experience.

As a Staff Mobile Engineer, you will be at the forefront of our mobile engineering efforts. You will be instrumental in aligning, designing, and driving the architectural vision for our mobile platforms & app features.

Mobile engineers come from different cultures, backgrounds, and working environments. They are spread across Europe (Spain, France, Germany). Each squad is composed of pairs of iOS & Android engineers, working on the native language to build the best experience for our users.

You will collaborate with other product squads & stakeholders, along with the Mobile Core squad (Platform) that is providing the foundations & infrastructure for your developer experience on apps. That’s why we are also in favor of having mobile engineers from product squads contributing to technical & core projects from time to time. It’s not only user experience but tech excellence.

Your expertise in native platforms (major iOS or Android), combined with your ability to make strategic decisions and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, will be key to driving our mobile engineering success. You will assist in ensuring that tasks are appropriately delegated, decisions are made judiciously, and information flows transparently within the company.

What you will do :

  • Lead the delivery of high-quality iOS & Android code (significant experience in one of these platforms), setting benchmarks for excellence and scalability, thereby propelling our app's capabilities and product cycle velocity.
  • Elevate the development of advanced app-first features, by emphasizing iOS & Android platforms innovation, bridges, and actively building expertise within the mobile engineering community at Back Market.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team of iOS & Android engineers, as well as peers from various disciplines (SRE, Backend, Frontend, CyberSec, Data, etc.), to foster a culture of technical excellence and shared knowledge.
  • Take ownership & anticipating significant technical projects, managing dependencies both internally and externally, to realize the engineering and product visions.
  • Drive the user experience forward by partnering with Product Managers & Designers, implementing intuitive UI animations, transitions, and accessibility features, while ensuring adherence to our Design System.
  • Architect robust and efficient code patterns, by leveraging the latest iOS & Android technologies, while maintaining a commitment to the app architecture principles, like modularity and dependency injection.
  • Advocate for efficient testing methodologies, from unit and UI tests to cutting-edge end-to-end practices, ensuring the highest quality and reliability of the features developed.
  • Monitor app performance meticulously, utilizing tools like Datadog and Crashlytics to track UI and core functionality, and implement strategies to prevent regressions.
  • Act as an internal spokesperson for the mobile engineering stack, advocating for technical initiatives internally, and representing Back Market at external tech events, conferences, and meetups, while also contributing to the broader tech community through articles and continuous learning.

Must have skills and experience

  • 7+ years of relevant and broad mobile engineering experience
  • Strong technical leadership with multiple teams, ability to build and drive mobile engineering vision & engineering excellence
  • Technical expertise in building and scaling native apps on iOS or Android (B2C), with high traffic, weekly features delivery & resolving complex issues
  • Experience successfully operating in a multi-module architecture
  • High knowledge and advocacy of Apple and Google UI guidelines, Swift & Kotlin languages, and mobile platforms’ frameworks.
  • Proven track record for mentoring and developing engineers
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.
