Position Overview

Context and Advantages:

This role is part of a collaborative initiative between two teams at Inria: COATI and DIANA, alongside the French National Research Agency (ANR) and the PEPR 5G project.

Assigned Mission:

To deepen understanding of the research subject, refer to the work by Muhammad Jawad Khokhar et al., which discusses methodologies for collecting data to estimate Quality of Experience (QoE) specifically for online video platforms. There is potential to adapt these methodologies for local video content.

Additionally, the study by Mathilde Jay et al. provides insights into the experimental evaluation of software-based power meters, focusing on CPU and GPU performance.

Further research by Muhammad Umair Khan et al. examines power consumption in mobile devices, addressing challenges in developing energy-efficient applications.

Collaboration:

The selected candidate will work closely with experts including Chadi Barakat, Frédéric Giroire, Joanna Moulierac, and Thierry Turletti.

Main Responsibilities:

The forthcoming beyond 5G networks (B5G) are expected to support a wide range of applications that demand high computational power, significant bandwidth, and low latency. These applications include video streaming, virtual reality, gaming, autonomous driving, and surveillance systems. The energy and resource consumption of these applications will depend on their design, demand, and network management strategies. Effective management will not only optimize resource utilization and energy consumption but also enhance the perceived Quality of Experience for users.

The challenge lies in intelligently managing the network to meet application requirements while maximizing resource efficiency. This involves modeling the computational and network demands of new applications within B5G contexts and linking these demands to user-perceived QoE.

We aim to establish this connection through experimentation with applications under various network configurations and loads, employing machine learning and data-driven methodologies. The subsequent phase will demonstrate how these models can optimize network tuning to enhance resource efficiency and minimize energy consumption, all while maintaining user QoE.

This PhD project will focus on popular services such as gaming, virtual reality, web browsing, and video streaming. The candidate will review existing literature on QoS and QoE modeling and design an experimental framework to assess energy consumption and user experience in a controlled setting. The goal is to find an optimal balance between energy efficiency and QoE, identifying configurations that yield the best outcomes.

The results will inform optimal network function placements and traffic adaptations to achieve a harmonious balance between the two critical dimensions of this study.

This project is part of a broader collaborative effort within the PEPR 5G initiative, involving numerous French research laboratories dedicated to networking advancements. It presents a unique opportunity for collaboration within the networking research community.
