Overview: The Production Practices team is a newly established group within our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) organization, dedicated to ensuring production readiness and guiding engineers in the adoption of best practices for reliability and operational excellence. Our mission is to advocate for engineers, enhancing the overall developer experience in building resilient services at Datadog, while also identifying, tracking, and mitigating systemic reliability risks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the charge for production readiness by establishing the technical framework for reliable and sustainable production practices.
  • Conduct readiness assessments for new services prior to their production launch and develop software to automate these processes.
  • Collaborate with various teams across Datadog to implement best practices that enhance resilience and operational excellence, including conducting training workshops on SRE concepts and producing reliability bulletins to address specific engineering challenges.
  • Identify challenges faced by engineers operating services in production and advocate for them by creating streamlined processes and tools that promote healthy production practices. Work with other infrastructure teams to enhance the developer experience and reduce the complexities associated with launching services.
  • Assist the organization in identifying, tracking, and mitigating emerging risks. Participate in cross-functional teams as needed to tackle complex reliability issues.
  • Partner with the Chaos Engineering team to conduct large-scale simulations that involve introducing faults into our systems. Follow up with engineering teams post-simulation to ensure risks are addressed and solutions are implemented.

Qualifications:

  • Approximately 5 years of experience working with distributed systems. Our work often involves reviewing unfamiliar services prior to their launch, so strong systems thinking and familiarity with common production patterns are essential.
  • A keen interest in training and upskilling others. We strive to build resilience by disseminating best practices, so prior experience in teaching or creating developer documentation is advantageous.
  • Proficient coding skills in Go and/or Python. We aim to automate as many manual processes as possible, leveraging code to amplify our impact.
  • Strong empathy, collaboration, and communication skills in English to effectively work with teams remotely. Our goal is to enhance the developer experience in launching and operating services in production, necessitating a genuine understanding of others' perspectives drawn from real-world experience.
  • A readiness to engage with new codebases and unfamiliar systems, quickly adapting to new challenges. We seek individuals who thrive on challenges and use their determination to navigate and clarify ambiguity.
