Descartes emerged from the belief that the growing intricacy of risks encountered by businesses, governments, and at-risk communities necessitates a fresh perspective in the insurance sector. Our team comprises industry experts from prestigious organizations (AXA, SCOR, Swiss Re, Marsh, Aon, ...) and leading scientists dedicated to achieving underwriting excellence. After five years of operation, Descartes has established itself as a frontrunner in parametric insurance for weather and climate-related risks, leveraging machine learning, real-time satellite imagery, and IoT technologies. Following a successful Series B funding round of $120M USD, we introduced Descartes Insurance, a comprehensive insurer authorized to underwrite risks by the French regulatory authority ACPR. With a rapidly expanding corporate clientele (over 350 and growing), our diverse workforce is based in Paris and operates from 13 global offices across North America, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan. Descartes is trusted by a panel of A-rated (re)insurers to conduct its operations.

ABOUT YOUR ROLE

In light of our ongoing growth, we are looking to enhance our Data, Software, and DevOps team. Central to our organization, your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and sustaining backend systems for interactive web applications;
  • Testing and refining existing code within current projects;
  • Implementing object-oriented design patterns in functional programming;
  • Profiling and optimizing Python code.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Create, enhance, update, and deploy software for:

  • Portfolio management;
  • Comprehensive analysis of risk models;
  • Interactive forms and data visualization;
  • User-adapted output exports;
  • Monitoring contracts and related data;
  • Testing and validating existing solutions.

Maintain the software solution through:

  • Version control;
  • Technical documentation (architecture design, detailed design, validation tests);
  • Adherence to programming best practices.

Support, test, and rectify tools for:

  • Continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD);
  • Data storage;
  • Modularization and containerization of IT solutions;
  • Integration with external and internal APIs.

Participate in:

  • Assessing and defining user requirements;
  • Translating technical specifications into software development tasks;
  • Managing bug tracking;
  • Overseeing software evolution;
  • Selecting technical solutions;
  • Engaging with IT partners;
  • Enhancing the skills of technical personnel;
  • Managing user access and rights for internal tools.

ABOUT YOU

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

[Hard skills]

  • Proficient in Python and Python API frameworks (FastAPI, Flask);
  • Experience with noSQL / SQL databases;
  • Familiarity with Docker;
  • Proficient in English and fluent in French;
  • Knowledge of production development workflows (code reviews, fast-forward git policy, pair programming, SCRUM);
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience (apprenticeships or internships may be considered).

[Soft skills]

  • Eagerness to mentor junior developers and explain software design and best practices;
  • Commitment to continuous learning from more experienced developers;
  • Willingness to propose enhancements in architecture or features;
  • Ability to decompose large tasks into manageable issues.

[Nice-to-have]

  • Experience in building interactive applications with React JS;
  • Familiarity with GCP or similar cloud platforms;
  • Experience in microservices architecture;
  • Knowledge of Agile or TDD methodologies;
