Research Opportunity

The INRIA is seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD candidate to work on a research project focused on incremental deep learning for embedded systems. The project aims to design and develop resource-efficient algorithms for edge AI, enabling the deployment of AI models on resource-constrained devices. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of novel machine learning techniques and their application to real-world problems.

Project Overview

The project will investigate the challenges of incremental learning on embedded systems, including the stability-plasticity dilemma, catastrophic forgetting, and the need for efficient updates. The candidate will work on designing and implementing novel algorithms and methods to address these challenges, with a focus on foundation models such as LLMs and multimodal models. The goal is to develop algorithms that can learn incrementally on embedded systems, retaining knowledge about previous tasks while incorporating new information.

Responsibilities

The PhD student will be responsible for conducting comprehensive studies and experiments to investigate the incremental learning capabilities of foundation models on embedded systems. The candidate will also explore state-of-the-art methods and adapt them to suit the constraints and requirements of embedded systems. Finally, the PhD student will develop and propose new methodologies specifically designed to enable foundation models to learn incrementally on embedded systems. The candidate will work closely with the supervision team to ensure that the research is aligned with the project's objectives and contributes to the advancement of the field.

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, the candidate must have a master's degree in computer science, AI, or a closely related discipline. A strong background in computer science and mathematics is essential, as well as a scientific attitude and the ability to reason through problems. The candidate must also have excellent programming skills and the ability to communicate written and orally in English in a clear and precise manner. A pro-active and independent attitude, as well as the ability to function well in a team environment, are also required. A good motivation for pursuing a PhD and working in Rennes or Grenoble is essential.
