Job Description

Research Context

This PhD research project is part of the Inria research initiative on Federated Learning, FedMalin. The successful candidate will join the NEO project-team, which is positioned at the intersection of Operations Research and Network Science.

Research Objectives

The goal of this PhD is to propose algorithms to design the communication topology for decentralized federated learning with the goal of minimizing the total training duration, taking into account how connectivity affects both the number of rounds required and the duration of a single round.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement decentralized federated learning algorithms for topology design
  • Investigate the impact of communication topology on training duration and convergence speed
  • Explore the use of degree-bounded topologies and other optimization techniques
  • Collaborate with the NEO project-team to integrate the developed algorithms into the FedMalin framework

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Strong background in optimization, machine learning, and network science
  • Programming skills in Python or C++
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Benefits

  • Subsidized meals and partial reimbursement of public transport costs
  • 7 weeks of annual leave + 10 extra days off due to RTT (statutory reduction in working hours)
  • Possibility of teleworking and flexible organization of working hours
  • Professional equipment available (videoconferencing, loan of computer equipment)
  • Access to vocational training and contribution to mutual insurance

Duration and Location

36 months, Sophia Antipolis, France

Gross Salary

2051€ brut per month (year 1 & 2) and 2158€ brut per month (year 3)
