PhD Position in Human Interactions in Social eXtended Reality

il y a 4 semaines

Rennes, Bretagne, France INRIA Temps plein

Project Context

META-TOO is a European project that aims to investigate gender-based inappropriate social interactions in the Metaverse. The project is placed at the intersection of VR/AR uptake, and social, behavioral, and technological research. In this fast-evolving digital environment, META-TOO addresses the urgent matter of abusive behavior within the virtual space, facilitating the collaboration of three distinguished institutions in Europe: Inria, NKUA, and IDIBAPS.

Research Objectives

The PhD position will focus on two main research topics: the impact of avatar and environment characteristics on the perception of inappropriate behavior of VR users, and design and evaluation of interaction techniques to cope with such behavior. The research will include exploration of avatar characteristics, such as realism of appearance and movement, animation, gender, ethnicity, attraction, etc., as well as the virtual environment (e.g., size, population density, social setting, and context).

Methodology

The PhD will help with formulating the research hypotheses, designing and conducting experiments in VR/AR, and analyzing the results. The target is to publish the studies at international conferences and journals, and it is expected that the student will be able to take the lead in paper production. The student will be given autonomy to explore ideas in the context of the project and implement them through guided supervision.

Requirements

The candidate must have a master's degree (or equivalent), with a preference in mixed reality or human-computer interaction. In addition, the candidate should be comfortable with experience in 3D/VR/AR applications, evaluation methods, and controlled user studies, as well as good knowledge in programming languages (e.g., C#, C++) and good spoken and written English.

Benefits

The PhD position offers a monthly gross salary amounting to 2100 euros for the first and second years and 2190 euros for the third year, as well as subsidized meals, partial reimbursement of public transport costs, possibility of teleworking (90 days per year), and flexible organization of working hours.
