Context and Opportunities
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team at INRIA, working on the development of energy-efficient beyond 5G networks. This project is part of a larger collaborative effort, the PEPR 5G and next generation networks, involving a large number of French research laboratories working on networking.
Research Objectives
The goal of this PhD project is to explore the balance between energy consumption and Quality of Experience (QoE) in beyond 5G networks. We will focus on popular services such as gaming, virtual reality, web browsing, and video streaming, and design an experimental framework to run these services in a controlled environment where we can measure and analyze the consumed energy and QoE at the application and user level.
Methodology
We will use a machine learning and data-driven approach to establish the link between the requirements of new applications and the perceived QoE by end users. We will experiment with an application in various network setups and loads, and build models relating resource utilization to network traffic. The next phase will be to showcase how the built models can help better tune the network to efficiently utilize its resources, and consequently the consumed energy, without sacrificing the end users' QoE.
Requirements
The recruited person will be in connection with Chadi Barakat, Frédéric Giroire, Joanna Moulierac, and Thierry Turletti. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in networking, programming, and experimentation. English language skills are required.
