Position Objective
WorldFish is conducting a study to understand the characteristics of aquaculture farmers in Kenya. We invite interested research companies and individuals to submit proposals for collecting data on aquaculture farmers in Kenya. The main objective of this call is to:
- Identify aquaculture farmers in selected counties in Kenya.
- Conduct data collection surveys of aquaculture farmers in selected areas in Kenya.
Scope of Work
The role of the consultant will be to collect data through household surveys according to the schedule outlined by the impact assessment team.
Key Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for:
- Submitting a detailed plan of activities to implement this project.
- Organizing a multistakeholder workshop on aquaculture hotspots and cold spots together with WorldFish staff.
- Drafting a report of the multistakeholder workshop on aquaculture hotspots and cold spots in Kenya.
- Identifying relevant areas in three main aquaculture producing zones in Kenya: High production zones, middle production zones, and low production zones together with WorldFish.
- Listing/obtaining a list of aquaculture farmers in three main producing zones in Kenya: High production zones (70% of respondents), middle production zones (25% of respondents), and low production zones (5% of respondents).
- Obtaining ethical clearance from relevant Institutional Review Board in Kenya before the commencement of the survey.
- Carrying out data collection up to, but not limited to, 5000 household surveys (estimated 45 minutes per survey) of selected farmers.
- Recruiting local enumerators for the collection of data in selected counties in Kenya.
- Arranging and facilitating training of enumerators to list farmers in the selected counties (if needed) and conduct household surveys in close collaboration with WorldFish.
- Locating households from the list of farmers obtained from the list of aquaculture farmers collected.
- Establishing a data quality assurance process and delivering high-quality primary datasets from household surveys.
- Identifying lessons learned from the fieldwork exercises and providing a report proposing practical recommendations for WorldFish that may help inform the design and implementation of future surveys.
- Conducting analysis of the data to give insight into the data (socioeconomic, production, and other relevant variables) and providing a report of the analysis of the data obtained.
- Sharing data regularly for checking data quality and progress of the project.
- Maintaining effective communication with WorldFish Impact Assessment team throughout the study period.
- All activities involving people must abide by procedures in accordance with WorldFish Human Research Ethics and local safety measures due to the coronavirus by obtaining informed consent from the study participants before collecting any information.
- Spatial scope: the fieldwork will be deployed across three main production areas in Kenya.
- Deliverable timeline: the timeline for each output may be subject to adjustments (prior consultation and approval with WorldFish) due to external factors (e.g., insecurity, weather changes, etc).
Deliverables
The consultant will report the progress of the assignment to WorldFish on a monthly basis.
Requirements
The consultant must have the following skills and demonstratable competencies:
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in aquaculture systems in Kenya.
- A lead consultant with a minimum of a master's degree in aquaculture, agricultural economics, or a related field.
- A minimum of 2 years' experience in data collection in aquatic food systems.
- A consultant team with strong skills in data analysis.
- Experience in Geographic Information Systems is an advantage.
Budget
Interested consultants are requested to provide a detailed budget proposal outlining professional fees, travel expenses (if applicable), and any other costs related to the consultancy. The budget should be submitted along with the application.
Evaluation and Selection
Applications will be evaluated based on the qualifications and experience of the consultant, the quality and feasibility of the proposed approach and work plan, the relevance of previous work examples, and the most competitive proposal. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview or request additional information before final selection. This opportunity is open to all applicants.
