Position Objective
WorldFish is conducting a comprehensive study to understand the characteristics of aquaculture farmers in Kenya. We invite qualified research entities and individuals to submit proposals for collecting data on aquaculture farmers in the region. The primary objectives of this initiative are:
- To identify aquaculture farmers in selected counties.
- To conduct a data collection survey targeting aquaculture farmers in specified areas.
Scope of Work
The consultant will be responsible for data collection through household surveys as per the schedule established by the impact assessment team.
The consultant is expected to:
- Provide WorldFish with a detailed activity plan for project implementation;
- Organize a multistakeholder workshop on aquaculture hotspots and cold spots in collaboration with WorldFish staff;
- Draft a report summarizing the findings of the multistakeholder workshop;
- Identify key areas in three main aquaculture production zones in Kenya: high, middle, and low production zones;
- Compile a list of aquaculture farmers across these zones;
- Secure ethical clearance from the relevant Institutional Review Board in Kenya prior to survey commencement;
- Conduct data collection involving approximately 5000 household surveys, each taking an estimated 45 minutes;
- Recruit and train local enumerators for data collection in selected counties;
- Facilitate training sessions for enumerators to list farmers and conduct household surveys in close collaboration with WorldFish;
- Locate households based on the compiled list of aquaculture farmers;
- Establish a data quality assurance process to ensure high-quality primary datasets;
- Identify lessons learned from fieldwork and provide a report with practical recommendations for WorldFish;
- Analyze the collected data to provide insights into socioeconomic, production, and other relevant variables, along with a report of the analysis;
- Regularly share data to monitor quality and project progress;
- Maintain effective communication with the WorldFish Impact Assessment team throughout the study;
- Ensure all activities comply with WorldFish Human Research Ethics and local safety measures, including obtaining informed consent from participants;
- Conduct fieldwork across three main production areas in Kenya;
- Adhere to a flexible timeline for deliverables, subject to prior consultation and approval with WorldFish.

Reporting
The consultant will provide monthly progress reports to WorldFish.
Skills, Experience, and Knowledge
The consultant(s) must possess the following qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in aquaculture systems in Kenya.
- The lead consultant should hold a master's degree in Aquaculture, Agricultural Economics, or a related field.
- At least 2 years' experience in data collection within aquatic food systems.
- Strong data analysis skills are essential.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems is advantageous.
Budget
Interested consultants are requested to submit a detailed budget proposal outlining professional fees, travel expenses (if applicable), and any other costs associated with the consultancy.
Evaluation and Selection
Applications will be assessed based on the qualifications and experience of the consultant, the quality and feasibility of the proposed approach and work plan, the relevance of previous work examples, and the competitiveness of the proposal. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview or asked for additional information before final selection.
