Overview
In response to the global energy transition challenge, John Cockerill has established a collaborative venture in China focused on the design, production, and installation of pressurized alkaline electrolyzers. A gigafactory dedicated to electrolyzer manufacturing is currently under development in France and Belgium, with plans for additional facilities in other regions.
Role within the Organization
As part of the R&D division within the Hydrogen Business Line, you will play a crucial role in advancing innovative solutions aligned with our product and technology strategies. This position is specifically linked to the Materials team, where your expertise will significantly influence the foundational technology of our alkaline electrolyzers. The role will necessitate your presence at our operational site in Seraing (Belgium) for one week each month, along with travel opportunities in France and internationally.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate, comprehend, and enhance specific mechanisms within pressurized alkaline electrolyzers that affect their efficiency and functionality, particularly focusing on components such as rings, seals, and electrode coatings.
- Establish testing protocols to evaluate material performance.
- Analyze, interpret, and synthesize testing results to inform development.
- Contribute to the advancement and safeguarding of Intellectual Property.
- Act as a primary liaison with research institutions and suppliers.
- Collaborate proactively with stack designers to ensure seamless integration of components within the stack.
Candidate Profile
- MSc/PhD in Material Sciences, Industrial Chemistry, Electrochemistry, or Chemistry.
- A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in a comparable role within a research facility, academic institution, or industry.
- Strong understanding of advanced materials (including polymers, synthetics, ceramics, composites, and catalysts) and experience in developing and testing procedures for pressurized systems, along with data analysis.
- Previous exposure to fuel cells, electrolysers, flow batteries, or electrochemical devices is advantageous.
- Proficient in material characterization techniques (such as SEM, XPS, mechanical testing, etc.).
- Knowledge of fluid mechanics is a plus.
- Practical laboratory skills are beneficial.
- Excellent command of English, both written and verbal (French language skills are a plus).
- Analytical mindset, team-oriented, problem-solving abilities, hands-on approach, and independence.
- Capability to plan effectively and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
