OverviewInria is a pioneering nonprofit organization dedicated to the long-term preservation and dissemination of Free/Open Source Software (FOSS). Our mission is to collect, organize, and maintain all publicly available software in source code form, along with its complete development history. Currently, our archive boasts over 13 billion unique source code files and 2.7 billion commits from more than 185 million software projects.

ResponsibilitiesWe are seeking a skilled Infrastructure Automation Engineer to enhance our operations team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong motivation for scripting, automation, continuous integration, and deployment.
As a vital member of the operations team, you will play a key role in maintaining our software stack and infrastructure, designing infrastructure improvements, and ensuring an efficient development environment for our developers.
Potential projects you may engage in include:
- Designing the architecture for new components within the Software Heritage ecosystem, focusing on scalability
- Assisting in the migration of our database from PostgreSQL to Cassandra
- Transitioning our internal object storage to a distributed solution (Ceph-based)
- Modernizing our CI/CD pipeline with tools such as GitLab CI or ArgoCD
- Overseeing and maintaining the Software Heritage infrastructure
- Implementing deployment and automation strategies
- Actively participating in team dynamics
- Collaborating with relevant Open Source communities and Software Heritage partners
The ideal candidate should have experience contributing to existing FOSS projects in various capacities (developer, community organizer, technical writer, etc.). We expect strong self-organization and autonomy skills based on your experience. Mastery of system administration best practices, particularly in the context of FOSS development, is essential, along with familiarity in software development.
Key skills include:
- Deployment and operation of Python applications
- Proficiency in Puppet or similar infrastructure automation tools
- Administration of PostgreSQL or equivalent databases
- Experience with container technologies
- Strong English communication skills (written and oral)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
Additional knowledge and experience in the following areas will be advantageous:
- Distributed scheduling technologies (e.g., RabbitMQ, Kafka)
- Scale-out storage solutions (e.g., Ceph, cloud-based blob storage, ZFS, Swift)
- Understanding of distributed software architectures
- System programming in C
- Partial reimbursement for public transport costs
