**The Underwriting function at a glance**:
Underwriting is about risk analysis and selection, trading, creativity and innovation. At Hiscox, underwriters use judgement, skill and experience to assess, accept or decline risks in line with our underwriting philosophy. They offer flexible and attractive underwriting solutions to customers, partners and brokers, and undertake account and performance analysis for lines of business and brokers or partners to ensure profitability. Our underwriting community is spread across a variety of product lines and areas of specialism. **As an Underwriting Graduate, you can expect to**:

- Develop a full understanding of underwriting basics and principles, gaining underwriting authority in at least one of our key business lines
- Use your analytical and critical thinking skills, learning how to assess risks, determine premiums and make underwriting decisions
- Build on your communication and interpersonal skills as you learn how to trade and negotiate with our brokers and partners in both good and poor market conditions. Trading is a key part of the role and you’ll be interested in working in sales and dealing with clients
- Make tangible contributions to your team from day one, interacting with a range of experienced colleagues and senior managers
- Receive on-the-job training as well as a structured learning programme ranging from technical knowledge to interpersonal skills
- Be part of an international graduate cohort, gaining a global network of peers across the business
- Receive support and guidance from our Early Careers Team, your Grad Buddy, Senior Sponsor who sits on the European Management Team, and benefit from regular access to the CEO of Hiscox Europe

**Your Secondments Explained**:
In addition to your core role, you’ll take on two secondments in different European locations - each secondment is three months long and we anticipate that one will be in our Lisbon office. Secondments enable you to develop a broader set of skills by experiencing a different role, as well as developing your understanding of our wider business by experiencing work in a different European location.

We want to invest in your long-term future at Hiscox, from the start. You will join on a permanent contract and at the end of the programme (December 2026), you will move into a role within the Underwriting function or one of our business units to continue your Underwriting career with us.
