**Summary / Role Purpose**:
The R&D Engineer contributes to the development of software products and supporting systems. In this role, the R&D Engineer will collaborate with a team of expert professionals to accomplish development objectives to advance Ansys leadership in optics and photonics simulation.

**Key Duties and Responsibilities**
- Performs moderately complex development activities, including the design, implementation, maintenance, testing and documentation of software modules and sub-systems.
- Learns and employs best practices.
- Performs bug verification, release testing and beta support for assigned products.
- Researches problems discovered by QA or product support and develops solutions.
- Works under the general supervision of a development manager or lead engineer.

**Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience**:

- Bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, computer science, or related field with knowledge of optics.

**Preferred Qualifications and Skills**:

- Optical engineering or optical physics research or industry experience.
- Programming skills in Python, C++, Matlab, or similar languages. Visual Studio C++, C#, and.NET skills are a plus.
- User experience with optical design or simulation software such as Zemax OpticStudio.
- Basic understanding of the software development process.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to learn quickly and to collaborate with others in a geographically distributed team, including regular online meetings with team members in UK, US, Canada.
- Fluent in English for both written and oral communication.
