Senior Policy Officer

**International Ocean Governance**:
The Ocean Team at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) is offering a 2-year contract based in IDDRI’s in the heart of Paris The role will focus on high seas conservation and deep-sea mining.

**The Ocean programme**:
IDDRI is a leading think tank that identifies the conditions and proposes tools to put sustainable development at the heart of international relations and public and private policies. Established over 20 years ago, our 50 staff members work with an extensive network of partners around the world.
The Ocean Team strives to promote the conservation of the marine environment and sustainable use of its resources through a range of projects at the science-to-policy interface, including:

- **High-seas conservation**:With a historic consensus recently reached on a new international treaty, we are now working on its future ratification and implementation.
- **Deep-sea mining**: The International Seabed Authority is under pressure to approve mining; we are helping inform States and stakeholders at this critical moment.
- **Regional ocean governance**: In collaboration with European and regional partners, we are organising the second edition of the Marine Regions Forum in the Western Indian Ocean.
- **Blue tourism**: Working closely with regional partners and the private sector, we are promoting a sustainable future for this global industry.

**Objectives and mission**:

- Provide intellectual leadership for the design and implementation of the projects’ impact strategy;
- Design intervention strategies adapted to the identified targets, with a view to influencing policy debates and decisions;
- Ensure the scientific and policy relevance of IDDRI’s outputs;
- Produce report, notes and policy briefs for decision-makers, scientific articles, and project deliverables;
- Coordinate with project partners and build relationships and collaborations with relevant stakeholders;
- Participate in international meetings and conferences;
- Contribute to the definition, in cooperation with the Communications Team, of impactful communication strategies;
- Represent IDDRI at events and in the media, providing expertise and input to public debates.

**Required qualifications**:

- Have a Master degree or PhD in social sciences (e.g. law, political science, economics);
- Have 5-8 years of relevant experience, particularly in ocean issues;
- Have excellent knowledge of international ocean governance processes;
- Have a track-record of successful design and implementation of impact strategies;
- Demonstrate experience in the production of articles, reports and documents for decision-makers;
- Have excellent communication and organizational skills;
- Have the capacity to work independently as well as in a team, in an international, multicultural environment;
- Be fluent in English, both spoken and written;
- Be willing to be based in Paris.

**The following would also be an asset**:

- Experience in international negotiations, as a member of a delegation or as an observer;
- Expertise on economic and financial aspects of ocean conservation, e.g. the financing of marine protected areas;
- Experience in fundraising;
- A reasonable command of French;
- Knowledge of another UN language;
- Experience working outside the European Union.

**Salary range**:
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, determined in accordance with IDDRI’s established rules and regulations. A 10% over the gross will be paid in the event that a long-term contract is not offered at the end of the term.
