Investigation of Silicides and Silicon Allotropes for Energy Applications

**Description du sujet**:

- As part of the Openbar project, supported by the French National Research Agency (ANR), we aim to tackle these challenges by developing new silicon alloys and/or novel allotropes of silicon with open structures. Preliminary _ab initio _calculations predict the emergence of new phases with the following promising features:

- **Open structures**, favorable for the diffusion of alkali metals (batteries).
- The aim of the thesis will be to synthesize open-structured silicides and study their thermoelectric properties and alkali-metal diffusion through electrochemical methods. The research will be developed along two main axes:

- **Material Development**: i) Via mechanochemistry followed by SPS sintering. ii) Under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions using a multi-anvil press on the ID06 LVP beamline at the ESRF in Grenoble.
- **Material Characterization**: The materials will be characterized structurally and microstructurally using X-ray diffraction (XRD) in laboratories and large-scale facilities (ESRF), as well as scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). They will also be chemically analyzed (EDX, ICP, XPS, EXAFS) and calorimetrically studied (DSC). Electrical, thermoelectric, thermal, optical, vibrational, spectroscopic, and electrochemical properties will also be investigated.

- Dans le cadre du projet Openbar, soutenu par l’Agence Nationale de Recherche (ANR), nous répondrons à ces défis en élaborant de nouveaux alliages de silicium et/ou de nouvelles formes allotropiques de silicium à structure ouverte. En effet des calculs _ab initio_ préliminaire prédisent l’obtention de nouvelles phases ayant des:

- **structures ouvertes**, favorables à la diffusion de métaux alcalins (batteries).
- L’objectif de la thèse sera de synthétiser des siliciures à structure ouverte et d’en étudier les propriétés thermoélectriques et la diffusion du métal alcalins par voie électrochimique. L’étude sera développée selon les deux axes suivants:

- **Élaboration des matériaux**: i) par mécanochimie suivie d’un frittage SPS, ii) sous hautes pressions - hautes températures en presse multi-enclume sur la ligne ID06 LVP à l’ESRF de Grenoble.
- **Caractérisation des matériaux**: les matériaux seront caractérisés d’un point de vue structural et microstructural par diffraction des rayons X (DRX) en laboratoire et en grands instruments (ESRF), par microscopie électronique à balayage (MEB) et en transmission (HRMET). Ils seront caractérisés chimiquement (EDX, ICP, XPS, EXAFS) et calorimétrique (DSC). Les propriétés électriques, thermoélectriques, thermiques, optiques, vibrationnelles, spectroscopiques, électrochimiques seront étudiées.
