**About the role**:
The main objective of this thesis is to study the impact of quantum computing on cryptographic algorithms and protocols.

Two main lines will be considered. First, quantum attacks against symmetric functions (algorithms and modes of operation). The goal is to devise new quantum algorithms or new ways to combine existing algorithms. A specific work will address the ability to convert quantum attacks (with superposition queries) into post-quantum ones (with classical queries only).

Secondly, quantum attacks against communication protocols will be studied, in particular assuming that the underlying cryptographic functions are quantum-safe. Also, appropriate security models will be studied in order to analyse the post-quantum security of communication protocols or their quantum variants (which will have to be defined if they do not exist yet).

Finally, the design of quantum-resistant protocols will be explored, as well as the possibility to combine classical and post-quantum cryptographic mechanisms, and purely quantum techniques (e.g., QKD).

**About you**:
The PhD student will have to demonstrate autonomy, intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness during research activities, rigor, use a methodical approach and pedagogy during the bibliography and writing phases (scientific papers, presentations, manuscript). He or she will be dynamic and proactive during the scientific process (definition, study and resolution of the problems considered during the thesis). He or she will demonstrate or develop communication skills (presentation of doctoral results).

The English language will be used regularly and predominantly for reading (bibliography), writing (scientific papers) and oral expression (conference presentations). A good level of English is therefore required.

The PhD student will join the Data Privacy Innovation team which is in charge of maintaining a high level of expertise in security for Orange Group regarding infrastructures and services. The research topics carried out by DPI include cryptography, data privacy, cloud security, system security, network security. The thesis will be located in Caen. The PhD student will be incorporated to the Applied Crypto Group which gathers 9 researchers in cryptography and 4 PhD students.

Moreover, the PhD student will also join the CAPSULE team at IRISA laboratory located in Rennes. There, the student will be supervised by André Schrottenloher and Pierre-Alain Fouque. The research topics dealt by CAPSULE include symmetric cryptography and post-quantum cryptography. This team gathers 5 reasearchers, 3 post-docs, and 7 PhD students.
