Your Mission As our fleet of robots grows across internal labs and customer deployments, we are building our internal fleet management system to handle how software is distributed, operated, and monitored across all our robots. As a hands-on, experienced Software Engineer, you will lead and actively contribute to the development of this platform to become the central hub that our engineers and operators use every day. This platform will enable seamless deployments and rollbacks, extensive system management controls and a centralized observability view in a scalable way, from a single unit to the whole fleet. Eventually, it will also provide an interface for our customers to interact with our robots. This is a key, high-ownership role sitting at the crossroads of several teams and stakeholders. It is a unique opportunity to build long-term, reliable and highly impactful software which will become UMA's operational backbone and allow us to scale the number of robots in the real world.

Key responsibilities
• Own how our software is deployed from source to physical robots, in various scenarios including development, production and rollbacks
• Build remote operation controls and job dispatching workflows on units—such as launching policy evaluations, triggering calibration routines, recording data, or starting teleoperation sessions
• Design configuration and calibration management to ensure machine-specific states, sensor calibrations, and hardware parameters are cleanly versioned and decoupled from code
• Expose real-time telemetry and fleet observability (actuator states, cycle performance, hardware logs), with proactive alerting when unit performance drops or components fail
• Develop the central management interface and underlying APIs for our operators, with secure access control and auditability, while keeping them extensible for customer systems to orchestrate robots down the road What You Bring to the Table
• 5+ years of software engineering experience building production-grade systems that manage real machines, distributed infrastructure, or edge devices
• Solid Linux systems fundamentals, networking, and comfort with device identity on networks you do not control
• Strong Python and clean API design (REST, gRPC, WebSockets), with a sharp eye for writing robust, maintainable services
• Good judgment about keeping operational tools simple, reliable, and ergonomic for other engineers and operators
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization, or release infrastructure that teams rely on daily
• Experience instrumenting distributed or edge systems with metrics, logs, dashboards, and actionable alerts (e.g. Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)
• Clear, proactive communication across disciplines: this work bridges software, hardware, and on-site robot operators
• Bonus: Experience with IoT/edge fleet management, OTA updates (SOTA/FOTA), robotics, or automating a hardware lab
• Bonus: Full-stack comfort or experience building internal dashboards (e.g., TypeScript/React)
• Bonus: Meaningful open-source contributions or technical writing UMA is an inclusive workplace that values exceptional builders over perfect pedigrees. Whatever your background, identity, or journey, if you don't meet every criterion but believe you can have an outsized impact here, we strongly encourage you to apply.
